A retailer's guide to the 4 main jewelry materials. Understand the difference between Brass, Sterling Silver, Gold Vermeil, and Gold Filled to sell better.
"Is this real gold?" "Will it turn my skin green?"
These are the questions that make or break a sale. To help you navigate the market and train your staff, we’ve broken down the four main tiers of jewelry materials found in boutiques today.
1. Gold Plated Brass (The "Fast Fashion" Tier)
- What it is: A thin layer of gold electroplated over a base metal like brass or copper.
- The Verdict: Great for trendy, cheap costume jewelry. However, the plating wears off quickly, exposing the brass which can turn skin green. It has zero intrinsic value.
2. 925 Sterling Silver (The "Cool Tone" Standard)
- What it is: An alloy containing 92.5% pure silver. It is a Precious Metal through and through.
- The Verdict: The gold standard for "Cool Tone" jewelry. It is hypoallergenic, valuable, and can last forever. Even if it oxidizes, it can be polished back to a shine.
3. 18K Gold Vermeil (The "Demi-fine" Luxury)
